A blacksmith forges a sword and shows it to his young son, Conan, while telling him about the "Riddle of Steel," an aphorism about the value of metal to the Cimmerians. A band of raiders commanded by Thulsa Doom massacres the Cimmerians one day; Conan's father is murdered by hounds, and Doom takes his sword to decapitate Conan's mother. The youngsters are sold into slavery and forced to labor at the Wheel of Pain, a gigantic mill. Conan lives to be an adult, growing into a huge, powerful guy. His lord finally trains him to be a gladiator, and after countless victories and training in the East, Conan is set free. Wild hounds pursue him, so he seeks sanctuary in the tomb of an Atlantean colonist warrior, where he recovers an old weapon. Conan travels the world, befriending Subotai, a Hyrkanian robber and archer, and encountering a prophesied witch in a hut.

Conan and Subotai follow the witch's advice and travel to Zamora in search of Doom. They meet Valeria, a female brigand, there. They invade the Tower of the Serpent, stealing jewels and other goods from a shrine and slaughtering a massive serpent in the process (including the best jewel of all: The Eye of the Serpent). The thieves rejoice after escaping with their loot, and Conan has sex with Valeria. The city guards apprehend the trio and deliver them to King Osric, who offers them a great prize if they can save his daughter, Princess Yasimina, who is now a zealot in Doom's cult. Conan, inspired by his hatred for Doom and his desire for vengeance, sets out alone to the villain's Temple of Set, also known as the Mountain of Power. Subotai and Valeria decline to join the mission.

Conan infiltrates the temple while disguised as a priest, but he is detected, kidnapped, and tortured. Doom gives him a lesson on the power of flesh, which he illustrates by hypnotically luring a girl to commit suicide by jumping to her death. Conan is thereafter crucified on the Tree of Woe, according to him. Subotai discovers the barbarian on the edge of death and brings him to Akiro, the Wizard of the Mounds, who resides on a burial place for warriors and kings and narrates the film. The magician conjures spirits to heal Conan, warning that they would "extort a terrible toll," which Valeria is eager to pay. These spirits also attempt to kidnap Conan, but after Valeria and the others save him, he is returned to health.

Subotai and Valeria agree to assist Conan in finishing Osric's quest and breaking into the Temple of Set. The thieves attack and leave with the princess as the cult indulges in cannibalism, but Conan is unable to combat Doom, who has miraculously turned into a giant snake and slithered away. Doom mortally wounds Valeria by shooting a stiffened snake as an arrow at her. She dies in Conan's arms, accepting the "toll" forewarned by the wizard in exchange for Conan's life, and is cremated at the Mounds, as Conan prepares to confront Doom with Subotai and the wizard. Conan begs Crom, his people's god, to grant him vengeance. They manage to slay Doom's men (including Thorgrim) when they arrive by employing booby traps and manipulating the terrain. Just when Rexor, Doom's lieutenant, is ready to defeat Conan, Valeria arrives as a Valkyrie and saves him from the fatal blow. Doom fires a stiffening snake-arrow at the princess after losing his troops, but Subotai blocks the shot with his shield, and the villain escapes to his temple. Conan recovers his father's sword from his opponents, a blade broken by his own hand in battle, toward the end of the conflict.

Conan and Princess Yasimina (who is no longer under Doom's spell and seeks vengeance for Doom's attempted murder of her) return to the temple where Doom is addressing his cult followers. Conan encounters Doom, who welcomes him with wide arms and tries to hypnotize him, but the barbarian resists and beheads his foe with his father's broken sword. Conan blows down the temple and restores the princess to King Osric when the disillusioned cultists scatter.
