After its conquest from the Muslims in 1213, the defense of the city of Alcántara was entrusted to the Order of Calatrava in 1214, but four years later they renounced Calatrava due to the distance and, with the permission of King Alfonso IX of León, Calatrava ceded Alcántara to the recently formed order of the "Knights of Julián de Pereiro" in exchange for a certain dependency of filiation with respect to the order of Calatrava, hence they also adopted the Cistercian rule. As a result of the establishment of its headquarters in the received town, the original name of the order of San Julián gradually disappeared, until in 1253 its masters were titled "masters of the order of Alcántara", with San Julián Pereiro being reduced to being a simple entrustment of the order.
