Dueling was at its peak in popularity by the mid-1600s. In fact, dueling was forbidden by King Louis XIII of France because he was afraid of losing too many of his key dignitaries to this dangerous sport!
Aristocratic noblemen considered it as their masculine duty to protect their honor with a sword, and as a result, they began not only seeking out the information and training provided by professional sword masters, but also investigating new sorts of weapon to give them an advantage. A smaller, lighter, and faster form of the rapier, which was simpler to carry and faster in combat, began to gain popularity. Many simply refer to the transitional rapier as a forerunner to what would eventually become the Smallsword.
Cold Steel´s ® version of this blade (dubbed the Cavalier Rapier) has a sharp double-edged and needle-tipped blade that is significantly shorter and lighter than a traditional rapier, allowing for far greater speed and agility. Its pierced tempered steel shell guard, rings, quillons, and knuckle bow provide excellent hand protection, while its wire-wrapped grip and counterbalancing pommel provide excellent comfort and liveliness in the hand.
For easy carrying, it comes with a hand-stitched leather sheath with steel neck, chape, and integral belt hook.
1055 High Carbon Steel
This shallow hardening steel's carbon concentration and lean alloy make it a particularly robust material that avoids a lot of the brittleness associated with higher carbon materials. It's especially well-suited to blades that require impact resistance, and it's commonly seen in large fixed blades and swords.
