Buy Viking Axes ᐉ Decorative, Battle-Ready ᐉ Medieval Armoury Shop

Perhaps the most common hand weapon among the Vikings was the ax - swords were more expensive to make and only wealthy warriors could afford them. The prevalence of axes at archaeological sites can be attributed to their role not only as a weapon, but also as a common tool. This is supported by the large number of Scandinavian women's grave sites that contain axes. Various types of specialized major axles for use in battle evolved, with larger heads and longer axles. The largest forms were as long as a man and were made to be used with both hands, called the Hane Dane. Some ax heads were inlaid with silver designs. In the later Viking era, there were crescent-edged ax heads that measured up to 45 centimeters (18 inches) called breiðöx (broad ax). The double-headed axes depicted in modern "Viking" art were very rare as it used more material and was seen as a waste in difficult times.

The Vikings used to carry robust axes that could be thrown or swung with a force that split the head. Mammen's ax is a famous example of such battle axes, ideal for throwing and melee combat.

An ax head was mostly wrought iron, with a steel edge. This made the weapon less expensive than a sword, and it was a standard item historically produced by blacksmiths.

Like most other Scandinavian weapons, axes were often given names. According to Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda, axes were often named after trolls.

The best known axes are:

  • Danish ax
  • Bearded ax
  • Francisca ax
