This lovely helm, complete with a hinged visor, is a replica of a common early 16th century jousting helmet known as a close helm or close helmet. The tight helm, which was invented in the late 15th century, was worn by knights and men-at-arms in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. It was a full-coverage helmet that shielded both the head and neck. While it saw action on the battlefield, it was most famous for its employment in competitions.
The most distinguishing feature that distinguishes this visored helm from the sallet and armet (from which it evolved) is the completely different opening and closing mechanism, which consists of an integral rotating bevor that opens vertically rather than laterally and is connected to the split visor by the same pivots.
Because the reconstruction we provide here is made of 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel, it is only appropriate for combat re-enactment to a limited extent. The visor is a split design consisting of two independent components articulated on a single pivot point on either side at the temples, precisely like the surviving original examples, so the wearer can choose to elevate simply the top part or the complete face protection. The entire front half of the helmet is hinged open and attached to the same pivots as the two-part visor, allowing the helmet to fit around the head. The bag is then closed using a side hook. The helmet has a large central ridge or crest that measures around 6 cm in length, 0.8 cm wide eye-slits, and numerous cutouts for adequate ventilation.
The adjustable, 3 mm thick leather chin strap closes with an antiqued brass buckle, and the darkened interior is furnished with a leather suspension liner.
This superb, totally wearable knightly helm will make your metamorphosis into a proud knight just right. It's suitable for light combat re-enactment, LARP, stage, or TV/film. It will, of course, be an excellent addition to any helmet collector's treasure chest.
