A military order is a Christian religious society of knights (Latin: militaris ordo). The Knights Templar, Knights Hospitaller, Order of Saint James, Order of Calatrava, and Teutonic Knights were the first military orders. They developed in the Middle Ages in connection with the Crusades, both in the Holy Land and on the Iberian Peninsula, with members dedicated to pilgrim protection and the defense of Crusader kingdoms. They are the forerunners of the knightly orders.
The majority of military orders were made up of laypeople who accepted religious vows like poverty, chastity, and obedience in accordance with monastic principles. The orders had a hierarchical leadership structure with the grand master at the top, and they possessed houses called commanderies all around Europe.
Only a few military orders were founded and recognized after the Knights Templar, the greatest and most powerful of the military orders, was suppressed in the early fourteenth century. Some, such as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Order of Saint John, the Catholic and Protestant successors of the Knights Hospitaller, remained in their original functions for longer. Military orders that have survived to this day have become primarily honorific or ceremonial organizations, or philanthropic institutions.
