Assassin's Creed is a Ubisoft open-world action-adventure stealth video game franchise developed primarily by Ubisoft Montreal using the Anvil game engine and its advanced derivatives. The Assassin's Creed series, created by Patrice Désilets, Jade Raymond, and Corey May, shows a fictional millennia-old conflict between the Assassins, who fight for peace and freedom, and the Templars, who seek peace via order and control. Historical fiction, science fiction, and fictitious characters are intermingled with real-life historical events and figures in this series. Players control a historical Assassin in the most of the games, as well as an Assassin Initiate or someone caught up in the Assassin-Templar battle in the present-day framing plot.
Assassin's Creed is a spiritual successor to the Prince of Persia series, and it was inspired by the Slovenian writer Vladimir Bartol's novel Alamut, which is based on the historical Hashashin sect of the medieval Middle East.
The first game in the series was launched in 2007, and there have been twelve main games in all, the most recent being Valhalla in 2020. The main Assassin's Creed games take place in an open environment and are presented in third-person perspective. Combat, stealth, and exploration are all important aspects of the game, as is the usage of parkour to explore the landscape. The games include both main and side missions, as well as competitive and cooperative multiplayer game modes (starting with Brotherhood in 2010).
